3D Face Scanning with Intel RealSense

Experimented with Intel RealSense SDK’s 3D scanning capabilities for facial capture. Pretty good results even with the basic example code.

Intel RealSense cameras use infrared depth sensing to create detailed 3D meshes of faces and objects in real-time. The SDK handles the complex computer vision work - infrared structured light for depth sensing, real-time point cloud generation, mesh reconstruction from depth data, and texture mapping from the RGB camera.

This technology enables virtual avatars for games and VR/AR applications, biometric authentication using 3D facial geometry, custom fit products like eyewear and masks, and animation rigging for facial motion capture. This early exploration with depth-sensing cameras provided valuable experience that later applied to AR/VR projects and face analysis features in mobile applications.
