“Webchemy” - Serendipitous Sketching, Now on Android

I ported bitbof’s creative sketching application Webchemy from web to Android. It’s a drawing app designed for rapid idea exploration and creative sketching, with emergent brushes and effects that generate unexpected, interesting results. Perfect for sparking creativity or creating abstract art.

The main challenges were adapting web-based HTML5 Canvas rendering to Android Canvas/OpenGL, optimizing touch input for mobile drawing, performance tuning for real-time generative effects on mobile hardware, and memory management for large canvas sizes. I also had to adapt the UI for small screens while maintaining the creative flow, replace mouse interaction with touch-optimized controls, and add Android-specific features like saving to gallery and sharing.

The port successfully brought the web application’s creative capabilities to mobile, making it accessible to artists and designers on-the-go. Built with Android, Java, and OpenGL ES.
